According to El Mundo, the latest forensic assessment by the Institute of Legal Medicine of Catalonia concludes that José María Enríquez Negreira has a neurocognitive disorder compatible with possible Alzheimer disease, which prevents him from facing legal proceedings.
The judge investigating FC Barcelona’s payments to the company of the former vice-president of the Comité Técnico de Árbitros ordered the examination in March, and the report states he lacks the cognitive capacity to understand the progress of the case.
The document records a clinical deterioration since a previous assessment carried out on 18 January 2024.
Negreira’s defence requested this new evaluation after submitting a Fundación ACE report, from a leading Alzheimer centre, which had already warned that he could not defend himself with full guarantees.
His condition has been examined before. Following earlier assessments, the investigating judge still proceeded to take his statement. Negreira appeared before Judge Joaquín Aguirre in March 2024 and exercised his right not to testify.
