Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has said he is ‘still smiling’ and ‘grateful to be here’ after undergoing urgent surgery on an abdominal injury.
The Nigerian international suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with the post during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester in the Premier League last weekend.
Awoniyi attempted to play on despite visible discomfort before the severity of his issue was revealed after the game. The 27-year-old underwent urgent surgery and was placed in an induced coma this week as he recovered.
During Forest’s 2-1 win at West Ham on Sunday, the squad wore shirts with Awoniyi’s name and number during their warm-up, before Morgan Gibbs-White celebrated with the striker’s shirt after opening the scoring.
Awoniyi has now taken to Instagram to offer an encouraging update on his condition.
“Still fighting, still smiling,” he posted.
“I am grateful to still be here, fighting and smiling. Having the Forest family visit me in hospital has lifted my spirits more than words can say. Thank you to football fans for your support and prayers.”
