Forest win shoot-out in Denmark to advance to the quarters | OneFootball

Nottingham Forest had to rely on penalties but eventually found a way past Midtjylland to progress to the quarter-finals in what was a highly entertaining contest.

Vítor Pereira made several changes to his Nottingham Forest side as they looked to fight back from a one-goal deficit suffered at the City Ground.

In Denmark, Forest was vastly improved though and they would have taken the lead even earlier in the game if it wasn't for Philip Billing making a goal line clearance, Lorenzo Lucca firing over the bar, and other missed opportunities.

The visitors had to wait until just five minutes before the break when Dilane Bakwa whipped in a ball that Nikola Milenkovic met first before Nicolás Domínguez headed home to make it 1-1 on aggregate.

Mike Tullberg made two changes at half-time but that didn't prevent Forest from doubling their lead in style. James McAtee's pass found Ryan Yates, the midfielder lined up his shot on the edge of the area and fired a rocket into the corner beyond the reach of Elías Ólafsson.

From that point on Midtjylland had to show some attacking impetus and they did, levelling the score on aggregate in the 69th minute after a cross bounced off Morato and fell kindly for Martin Erlic finish.

The Tricky Trees had a chance to clinch what could have been a late winner when Morgan Gibbs-White led a counter attack and played Ola Aina through but the Nigerian wasn't able to find the finish.

Forest had the ball in the net just seconds after the start of extra-time when Aina found Lucca to finish but the Italian looked like he had been judged into an offside position.

A much closer call came in the 118th minute as Yates headed in what he thought would have been a dramatic winner. The Forest man tried to keep onside but had just strayed meaning that penalties awaited.

It seemed like Midtjylland couldn't handle the pressure of the shoot-out with Cho Gue-sung and Aral Simsir both hitting the post before Edward Chilufya unfortunately slipped and skied his spot-kick. Meanwhile, Forest buried all theirs with fine efforts from Gibbs-White, Ibrahim Sangaré, and Neco Williams to advance to the next round.
