Forget Adam Wharton, Liverpool just opened the door to unreal signing

Liverpool appear to have moved on from Adam Wharton. Instead, they're aiming for an unreal signing.

Journalist Ben Jacobs tells TalkSport that Liverpool aren't expected to move for Adam Wharton this summer. In fact, he feels it would be a 'surprise' if they entered the race at this stage.

That claim comes after months of reports suggesting Wharton was high on the agenda for Liverpool. The Reds could really use a new midfielder, after all, and the Crystal Palace star isn't just talented but also homegrown.

However, it seems Liverpool will move for someone else. Exactly what that is isn't particularly clear but it's interesting that this report comes on the back of a very interesting one out of Tottenham Hotspur.

Lucas Bergvall has informed Spurs that he wants to move on, per the Athletic. This comes as they're linked to signings like Sandro Tonali - a player who would immediately jump ahead of the Swede.

Bergvall is expected to move on, then, and he's one Liverpool have had their eye on for a long time now. Anfield Watch has understood for quite some time that the 20-year-old was on the wishlist - it just wasn't thought that he was particularly available.

That's now changed, and ditching the Wharton pursuit opens the door nice and wide for a Bergvall bid. Watch this space.

Lucas Bergvall: Situation Summary

Tottenham Career and Performance

As of 22 June 2026, Lucas Bergvall is a 20-year-old midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur. Since arriving from Djurgården in 2024, the Swedish prodigy has experienced a fluctuating tenure in North London. After a promising debut year under Ange Postecoglou, where he featured 45 times and won the Europa League, his 2025/26 campaign proved heavily disrupted. Plagued by an ankle surgery in January and tactical changes following Roberto De Zerbi's appointment, Bergvall was limited to sporadic second-half cameos, totaling 33 appearances and mostly sitting on the bench during a grueling relegation battle. Frustrated by a lack of minutes, he has officially requested a summer transfer despite a contract extending until June 2031.

International Status and World Cup Involvement

Bergvall is currently in North America representing the Sweden national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Primarily utilized as an impact substitute by his country, he recently came off the bench during Sweden's 1–5 group stage defeat to the Netherlands on 21 June 2026. As Sweden fights for knockout qualification, Bergvall's club future remains highly volatile, with Premier League clubs like Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Chelsea closely monitoring his situation.
