Manchester United have been linked with big-money midfield reinforcements ahead of the summer, but Jim Thwaites represents a cost-free internal solution.
The Red Devils are bracing themselves for what is shaping up to be a major overhaul in the middle of the park. After all, Bruno Fernandes has returned to operating as an attacking midfielder, while Casemiro has already announced his departure.

Moreover, Fabrizio Romano revealed on Monday evening that Manuel Ugarte could be sold as well. This leaves Kobbie Mainoo as the only central midfielder guaranteed to play for Man Utd in the 2026/27 campaign.
With United expecting to sign two or three new midfielders, a flurry of names have been circulating in the media. This includes Carlos Baleba, who was the club’s main target last summer, but is currently enduring an underwhelming campaign at Brighton.
Nevertheless, the Cameroonian isn’t the only MUFC target who hasn’t met the expectations this season. Elliot Anderson has been identified as the club’s new priority, and while he managed to impress at times, he hasn’t truly delivered the sort of quality and consistency that justify Nottingham Forest’s £100 million asking price.

Perhaps the same applies to Adam Wharton, a massively talented deep-lying playmaker, who hasn’t quite performed to the expected standards this term. On Sunday, he had another tepid outing against Man Utd at Old Trafford.
Therefore, spending £100 million on any of the three aforementioned players would entail a major risk for Man Utd. And with potentially three slots to fill, the wisest choice might be combining large investments with smaller ones, or perhaps even considering no-cost additions to the squad.
This is why Jason Wilcox and Co. should seriously consider promoting Jim Whaites to the first team.
On Monday evening, Man Utd U21 suffered a 0-2 defeat to Chelsea in a Premier League 2 contest. Nevertheless, observers were still impressed by Thwaites, who enjoyed a positive 30-minute cameo after replacing Tyler Fletcher at the hour mark.
The 18-year-old midfielder often features for Darren Fletcher’s U18 side, but he’s gradually beginning to carve out a place with the U21 team.
Due to his vision, composure on the ball and passing range, Whaites has been compared to Barcelona star Pedri, and his highlights from Monday offer further evidence of his massive talent.
Curiously, the teenager’s position and playing style are very similar to Wharton’s. While the England international is undoubtedly more blooded, with important top-level experience under his belt, perhaps it is time for the United officials to prove their commitment to the club’s academy by refusing to pay a king’s ransom for a player developped elsewhere and giving the nod to one of their own.
