Chelsea and Napoli are now proceeding to complete the formal steps of Romelu Lukaku’s move to the Serie A outfit according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have been trying to offload Lukaku all summer and despite weeks of negotiations the clubs still hadn’t reached a breakthrough.

However, on Friday night it was reported that an agreement worth up to €45m had been reached for the Belgian international, meaning his nightmare second spell at Stamford Bridge is now over.

Final steps to be taken before Lukaku departure is official

Lukaku has agreed a three year deal with Napoli where he will reunite with former manager Antonio Conte after the pair worked together at Inter Milan and won the Serie A title.

Despite reaching an agreement the deal hasn’t been finalised yet but Romano has provided an update and reported that all parties are now proceeding with the formal steps to complete the deal.

He took to X.com and said:

“Chelsea, Napoli and player’s camp are now proceeding with formal steps to get all documents signed for Romelu Lukaku deal. Verbal agreement 100% confirmed as reported on Friday. Lukaku also spoke to Antonio Conte after the breakthrough. Permanent move, 3 year contract.”

Having rejoined Chelsea in the summer of 2021 from Inter, Lukaku made it pretty clear that he didn’t really want to return to Stamford Bridge with that now infamous interview and he’s spent the last two seasons on loan at Inter and Roma.

The Belgian’s move to Napoli opens up the possibility of Victor Osimhen joining the Blues, although at this stage Chelsea are only interested in a loan deal which doesn’t appeal to Napoli or the player.

It’s been reported that if a deal can’t be agreed or the Nigerian ends up moving elsewhere then Chelsea do have alternative targets, although who they might be remains to be seen.
