Former AC Ajaccio president Alain Orsoni has passed away this Monday at 71 after being shot dead during his mother’s funeral in southern Corsica, as reported by AFP. The specialized interregional court of Marseille and the national anti-organized crime prosecutor’s office have jointly taken over the investigation. France 3 reports that Orsoni was struck by a single bullet to the chest.
Orsoni was a major figure of the Corsican nationalist movement. He was the former leader of the Front de libération nationale corse (FLNC) and he later founded and led the Movement pour l’auto-détermination.
Orsoni was already the target of previous assassination attempts, notably in 1983 and 2008. Orsoni was the president of AC Ajaccio – one of the two major Corsican football clubs with Sporting Club de Bastia – from 2008 to 2015. He returned at the head of ACA in 2022, only to leave his post the following year. The club is currently in the amateur leagues after filing for bankruptcy.
