Igli Tare, the former AC Milan sporting director, is under investigation in Albania in a high-profile corruption case.

The special anti-corruption prosecutor's office SPAK said on 9 September that the probe forms part of proceedings involving former deputy prime minister Belinda Balluku, who has been charged over the award of public contracts. Prosecutors have widened their case to include the 53-year-old former Albania striker with 67 caps, who also holds Italian nationality.

Tare was Milan's sporting director from 2024 until May 2026 and is suspected of money laundering. He previously played in Italy for Brescia, Bologna and Lazio, then served as Lazio's sporting director in 2008-2009 and 2022-2023.

Balluku, an ally of prime minister Edi Rama, was charged in November 2025 with favouritism in tendering for two major road projects worth several hundred million euros. She was removed from office the same month.

Two villas on the Ionian coast, at Dhërmi and Palasa, were allegedly registered in Tare's name and have been seized. The properties were allegedly sold to him in a fictitious deal to conceal undeclared assets.

Tare was questioned by investigators in August. Tackling organised crime and corruption remains a key condition for Albania's bid to join the European Union, and several former ministers from Rama's governments have faced corruption cases since 2013.
