According to De Telegraaf, Australian international goalkeeper Mathew Ryan is set to leave AZ Alkmaar after failing to agree a new deal with the club. The Dutch newspaper are reporting that Ryan has ‘lost his game of poker’ with AZ’s sporting director Max Huberts, as the club walked away from negotiations due to his wage demands. The former Arsenal and Brighton shot stopper will become a free agent whilst AZ opt to hand homegrown talent Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro an opportunity between the sticks.
Matthew Ryan joined AZ Alkmaar in January 2023 following spells in the Premier League, LaLiga, and a number of other European sides. The 32-year-old featured 64-times for the Eredivisie outfit, with 15 of those appearances coming in the Europa Conference League. The club finished fourth in the league last season behind the familiar names of PSV, Feyenoord and Twente. Next season they’ll be hoping to climb further up the table, but with a different shot stopper in goal.
