Former Arsenal star Theo Walcott says fans need to relax and trust the team to win the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners are currently top of the league with eight games to go, but Walcott says he can sense a lot of nerves among the fanbase.

Speaking to Hayters at the London Football Awards, Walcott said: “I think talking to a lot of Arsenal fans they are as stressed as you like. They need to calm down. I genuinely feel like at times the players can feel that and feed off that. They are doing their job right now and are above City and Liverpool. Just relax.

“Mikel Arteta is here to do a job. It is not going to be pretty, particularly at the end of the season. It is all about winning now.

“It’s not about how you play or perform. It’s all about results. Look at Tottenham, they couldn’t care less how they play, they just want results. West Ham too. I am quite relaxed, and I think everyone else needs to be. Mikel will be relaxed.”

Arsenal are seven points ahead of Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

Asked if he enjoyed watching Arsenal play football, Walcott said: “Arsenal have only lost three games! I enjoy seeing them winning. That is what it’s about, winning the Premier League. Of course there are times when I’ve not enjoyed watching Arsenal. I’d be lying if I said otherwise.

“But that’s how a lot of teams are playing this year, not just Arsenal. That’s the way football is going. It is all about finding a way to be better than the opposition. And Arsenal have managed that better than anyone, hence why they’ve only lost three games and are top of the league.”
