Barcelona seem keen on signing a new full-back this summer, with a number of names doing the rounds.

The club do not seem satisfied with the current incumbents on either flank, Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde, and one of the potential targets is Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, the former La Masia graduate is prioritising a return to Blaugrana despite attracting interest from several clubs in Europe.

The 27-year-old believes that his time at Stamford Bridge has come to an end, and both the player and the club are understood to be open to a transfer this summer.

Hansi Flick is said to be a strong admirer of Cucurella’s talent and values the profile he brings to the table. However, any potential transfer seems to be tied to the future of Balde.

Balde’s future could be key

The report states that Barcelona would only consider signing Cucurella if there is any movement surrounding Balde.

At the moment, the academy starlet is not actively seeking an exit, leaving the Catalan club in a tricky position with a difficult decision to make.

While Cucurella would provide immediate experience and stability and is more rounded than Balde at this stage of their careers, it would be a difficult investment.

Chelsea are said to be seeking between €40 million and €50 million for the Spanish international, especially with no shortage of interest.

Barcelona may be on the clock

Cucurella’s desire to return gives Barcelona an advantage, but there is no guarantee.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have all set their sights on the 27-year-old.

The defender is currently on international duty with Spain, where he is set to be a starter for Luis de la Fuente, and a good showing will only drive his price further up.

For Barcelona, it is a difficult situation to be in. It is a plus that Cucurella is ready to wait, but that time is not endless.

If they do not make a decision on their academy graduate’s future soon, other clubs could swoop in and secure his signature, and a reunion may no longer be on the cards.
