Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s situation at FC Barcelona has triggered serious concern in Germany. After 11 years at the club, the 33-year-old goalkeeper may be facing his final days as a Barça player following the arrival of Joan Garcia.
The La Liga champions plan to install Garcia as their starting goalkeeper with Wojciech Szczesny as the backup leaving the club captain out of the picture.
However, Ter Stegen, for his part, has stood firm on his intention of wanting to stay at Barça.
Speaking to Sport1 (h/t AS), former Germany international and Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Basler was critical of Barcelona for their treatment of Ter Stegen, claiming that clubs do not honour contracts any more.
“This is what happens nowadays. If you’re injured and you’re no longer needed, you’re thrown away like a garbage bag,” said Basler.

The former Bayern Munich midfielder sees Ter Stegen’s exit as inevitable, as he said: “It’s no surprise. He won’t have a chance there and he’s even risking his place in the national team.
“He will have to find something else if he wants to be number one at the 2026 World Cup.”
Basler took a swipe at Barcelona directly, stating: “Contracts are no longer worth anything.”
This comes after Germany manager Julian Nagelsman previously expressed concerns about Ter Stegen’s situation at Barcelona and his future, especially with the veteran star now being Die Mannschaft’s No. 1 in goal.
Ter Stegen, so far, has attracted tentative interest from Galatasaray while some teams in the Premier League are also said to be looking at him.
A meeting will take place between him and Hansi Flick in a few weeks after his vacation following which a concrete solution regarding his future will emerge.
