Atlanta United has dismissed head coach Ronny Deila, the club announced Sunday, October 19. A global search for a new permanent head coach will begin immediately. “It was evident that our standard of play was not met this season, and together with our senior leadership team, we have decided that it was in Atlanta United’s best interest to move the team in a different direction. Ultimately, we owe our fans a much better on-field product and it is our unwavering commitment to provide that to this community as soon as possible,” Atlanta United CEO and President Garth Lagerwey said. “We want to thank Ronny for his time and commitment to the organization and wish him well in his future endeavors.” Deila joined Atlanta United in December of 2024. During his one season in charge, Atlanta United went 6-18-13 across all competitions.

Deila joined Celtic in 2014 as a surprise appointment from Stromsgodset. Initially, it transpired, that Deila was intended to come into the club as Assistant Manager to Roy Keane. Although, the Irish legend decided against taking up the role, leaving Celtic flapping in their hunt to replace Neil Lennon. The Norwegian was a left-field appointment but had success in Norway as a young manager.

Ronny won 2 titles and 1 league cup in his time in Glasgow and played a role in the side’s push towards 9IAR. It is right that the role that he played in developing the club is widely recognised. He was put in an impossible position whereby he was only given some tools to do the job with decisions being taken from above with regards to transfers etc. Sound familiar?

Deila lifted the MLS Cup with New York City and was praised for his success in ‘The Big Apple’ for the City Football Group outfit. A return to Europe with Standard Liege lasted a year before jumping ship to their Belgian rivals, Club Brugge.
