Craig Bellamy Dismisses Celtic Links, Reaffirms Focus on Wales

Craig Bellamy has firmly played down speculation linking him with the vacant managerial post at Celtic, insisting his only focus is on leading Wales to World Cup qualification.

When Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager last month, it was inevitable that Bellamy’s name would appear among potential successors. The 46-year-old, who spent a memorable loan spell with the Glasgow giants during the 2004-05 season, remains a popular figure among supporters.

However, Bellamy was quick to distance himself from any potential move back to Celtic Park, instead emphasising his satisfaction in his current position. “It’s not on my radar, and it won’t be on my radar,” he stated. “I can understand the links because I played there, [now] I’m coaching, so I definitely understand the links. But to me, I love what I’m doing at this present moment. I have to be honest, I’m completely focused on what’s to come.”

Appointed as Wales manager in July 2024, Bellamy has guided his country to promotion to the top tier of the Nations League, implementing an expressive and bold brand of football. Despite recent results testing his approach, his commitment to the national project has not wavered.

Building Momentum with Wales

Wales face crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia in November, with two wins guaranteeing second place in Group J. Bellamy remains optimistic and concentrated on that task. “It looks it’s going to be a play-off in March, we know that and to me, that’s all I’m focused on,” he said.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City forward has brought new energy to the Welsh camp. His tactical emphasis on attacking transitions and high-intensity pressing mirrors the best elements of his playing career. Although results have dipped in recent weeks, Bellamy’s belief in his players and his own philosophy has remained unshaken.

He admitted the challenge has tested him but stressed how much he values the role. “I couldn’t want for anything more than what I have at this present moment and that’s where it lies with me,” Bellamy explained. “Having this at the moment has been one of the best periods of my life and hopefully that continues for a lot longer as well.”

Understanding the Reality of Management

Bellamy’s grounded perspective reflects the maturity of a man who has seen the highs and lows of football. His four-year contract with Wales, which runs until 2028, offers security, but he recognises how swiftly opinions can shift in international management. “I have a number of years to run… I did sign a four-year contract,” he noted. “Now, I know the game as well. Like, you lot might have had enough of me in a short space of time, that’s reality as well. But I feel as long as I’m wanted, and people in Wales feel like I can add, then that to me is something that motivates me, then I stay.”

That humility, combined with his drive to improve, has resonated within the Welsh setup. Players have spoken positively about his man-management skills and the freedom he grants them on the pitch. It is precisely this environment that has seen Wales remain competitive despite the transitional challenges following the retirements of senior figures.

Bellamy’s Long-Term Vision

Bellamy’s response to the Celtic speculation highlights a coach focused on building something lasting. His admiration for the club where he once wore the green and white is clear, yet his ambitions remain firmly tied to his current project. “I try and live day by day you know, it’s not always wise but to me it makes sense and in that I try and appreciate what I have,” he said.

As Wales aim for another World Cup appearance, Bellamy’s leadership and sense of perspective will be vital. His passion for football and deep connection to his national side suggest he is determined to write his managerial story in Cardiff, not Glasgow.
