Former Celtic winger Gary Mackay-Steven has completed a move to Partick Thistle, reuniting with Mark Wilson…

The 35-year-old had been without a club since leaving Ross County earlier this year. The former Scotland international has now signed a deal at Firhill that will run until the end of the season.

Mackay-Steven began his senior career with Airdrie United in 2011 before earning a move to Dundee United, where he impressed over four seasons with his flair and attacking creativity at Tannadice.

In 2015, he agreed a pre-contract to join Celtic under Ronny Deila, later completing a Deadline Day transfer alongside teammate Stuart Armstrong.

Gary Mackay-Steven scored twice in Celtic’s 3-1 win over St Johnstone at Celtic Park on 23 January 2016.

The Thurso-born forward went on to sign for Aberdeen in 2017, remaining in the Scottish Premiership before opting for a switch abroad to Major League Soccer with New York City. He eventually returned to Scotland with Hearts, spending two years at Tynecastle, and later joined Kilmarnock in 2023.

GMS earned two caps for Scotland, with his most recent appearance coming in 2018, but now is back in the game with the Jags as Mark Wilson’s side push for promotion.

Speaking to club media, Wilson said: “Gary is someone I played with at Dundee United and he has always been a supremely talented player. I got in touch with him recently to find out what his situation was after leaving Ross County and he was very keen to come in and train.”

“We’re obviously a bit light on numbers at the moment, especially in the wide areas, and Gary represents a very useful option on the wing. He’s been without a club for about six weeks so he’ll not be match sharp straight away but I can tell he’s eager to contribute as quickly as possible.”
