Former Chelsea manager could help his old club with bid for unhappy former star

Ben Chilwell has had a rough 6 months.

Told soon after new manager Enzo Maresca’s arrival that he wasn’t going to be needed, the left back has since spent almost the entire time since as an outcast, picking up the occasional cup minute but otherwise totally excluded and written out of history as the Blues try to persuade him to give up on his big contract and move elsewhere.

Interest has not been forthcoming – those £200,000 a week wages make it hard for anyone to get serious about signing him, especially if Chelsea want a transfer fee. But with January now here and a few weeks to try and prevent the second half of this season being as disappointing as the first for the former key player, there is at least one whisper of interest.

FootballTransfer.com claim that new West Ham boss Graham Potter is keen to bring his old Chelsea colleague to the London Stadium this month to help his quest to stabilise the club.

28 year old Chilwell showed his quality in a few games under Potter, despite the coach’s struggles in his short spell at Stamford Bridge, and would give the Hammers an experienced, attacking left back option.

An agreement not far off with 3 parties all keen

An unhappy Ben Chilwell captains Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Chelsea want to sell Chilwell permanently, they’ve made that very clear. But given how tough it’s been to find any interest at all, let alone serious interest and bids, they may now decide to change tactic and allow him to be loaned for the rest of the season to at least get their asset in the shop window.

The report says that the Hammers will look to sell right back Vladimir Coufal in order to make some space on the wage bill, and they will then offer to split Chilwell’s wages with Chelsea.
