Lazio defender Mario Gila has declared his unwavering loyalty to the Italian team, saying that even if the illustrious Real Madrid were to show interest in him, he would not leave his team.

The young centre-back, once a trainee at Real Madrid, has become a vital part of Lazio’s defence since joining them in the summer of 2022.

It must be noted that Gila’s journey with Real Madrid began in 2018 when he trained with the club for four years.

Despite his hard work and dedication, he could not secure a spot in the first team. This led to his transfer to Lazio for a reported fee of €6 million fee, along with a clause that ensures Real Madrid a share of any future resale.

Fast forward to the current transfer window, and Real Madrid are looking to bolster their defensive line.

Although their primary target is Leny Yoro, Gila’s name has emerged as a potential alternative. This speculation has sparked interest and excitement among fans and analysts alike.

A clear NO to Real Madrid

However, in a recent interview, the 23-year-old defender made it clear that he intends to remain with Lazio, regardless of Real Madrid’s interest.

Gila expressed his commitment to the Italian club, stating his desire to set an example through his loyalty and performance.

“Do I want to be a new reference for Lazio? Absolutely yes,” the defender was quoted by Diario AS.

“I am not leaving here, even though Madrid have an option and offers have arrived. The club believes in me and I believe in Lazio,” he added.

Gila option ruled out

The discussion around Gila’s potential move to Real Madrid was further complicated by an unfortunate incident during Lazio’s pre-season camp.

During training, Gila suffered a serious injury, fracturing his left foot. The injury occurred during a routine drill and has sidelined him for the foreseeable future.

Lazio quickly confirmed the injury, releasing a statement that read, “Mario Gila underwent clinical and instrumental examinations which revealed a fracture of the phalanx of the big toe of his left foot, suffered during training.”

This setback has certainly put any transfer rumours to rest, as Gila will be focusing on his recovery over the next few weeks.
