Former Everton midfielder Isaac Price was the hero for Standard Liege as they beat Club Brugge 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The 20-year-old Northern Ireland international had recently lost his place in the side with the arrival of new signings Isaac Hayden and Steven Alzate. However, he came off the bench with just over 20 minutes to go and made a telling impact. In the 90th minute he smashed in Wilfried Kanga’s set back to win the game for Standard.
Earlier, the home side had taken the lead through Merveille Bokadi, although the 27-year-old DR Congo’s goal looked to have been offside. VAR did not pull it back, meaning that Standard led at half-time. With time running down, Club Brugge looked to have salvaged a point when the inform Andreas Skov Olsen scored his seventh league goal of the season with five minutes to go.
However, Price’s late goal means that Club Brugge have not won in the league since the 16th of September. After three consecutive draws and this defeat to Standard, there will certainly be pressure on the side going into their next match against bottom of the table Kortrijk.
For Standard, their season has completely turned since the end of the transfer window. The new players appear to have given the side some impetus, with their last defeat in the league coming on the 19th of August. Since then, the side have won three and drawn three and now sit ninth in the table, just three points behind Club Brugge in fifth.
