Ex-Germany national team goalkeeper, Uli Stein, wrote in his Kicker.de column that he is not entirely convinced of Oliver Baumann as the nation's first choice goalkeeper for the World Cup.
"There's no question that over the years he has earned great respect and earned appearances for the national team.
"But in a competition like the World Cup, it's about much more than just holding the ball and playing.
"History shows that German teams, as well as other World Cup-winning teams, have almost always had great players, even icons, in goal," said the 70-year-old.
Despite his 500 Bundesliga appearances, the 35-year-old lacks international experience with just seven international caps in his professional career.
Regardless, Stein has a lot of faith in Marc-André ter Stegen. The Barcelona shot-stopper is currently suffering from back problems but should be back soon.
“We still have good goalkeepers in Germany. But I only see the 'DNA' to lead with strength in a team that might not even be solid and stable at the start of the World Cup in Marc-André ter Stegen," Stein said.
