Simone Inzaghi has emerged as a candidate to replace Gennaro Gattuso as Italy head coach, with the former Inter Milan manager reported to be feeling the pull of home after his spell in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal.
According to Corriere della Sera, via FCIN, Inzaghi features on the shortlist of potential successors should Gattuso’s tenure come to an end.
The outlet suggest he “is apparently already feeling some nostalgia for Italy.”
Indeed, it is a telling detail that hints at a potential desire to return to European football sooner than expected.
Inzaghi is not the only high-profile name in the mix.
Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte are among the candidates.
Both former Italy coaches, with strong track records, described as “intrigued by the idea” of a return to the national team setup.
Massimiliano Allegri also appears on the list.
Although the current AC Milan coach seems more likely to remain in club football for now.
The landscape for the Italy job is complex.
Gattuso led the Azzurri to the World Cup play-off final.
However, the defeat to Bosnia has raised massive questions over the direction of the national team.
Whoever takes charge next will inherit a squad with genuine quality but a need for clear identity and leadership from the dugout.
Inzaghi’s name in the conversation will surprise few.
