Former Italy international Giacomo Bonaventura retires at 36

Giacomo Bonaventura has retired from football at 36. According to L'Équipe, the former Italy midfielder, capped 18 times with one goal, confirmed the decision on Friday.
He had been without a club since leaving Al-Shabab in June last year, having spent the 2024-25 season in Saudi Arabia.
He came through at Atalanta, where he played his first professional seasons, before joining AC Milan in summer 2014. Despite a lean period for Milan, he made 184 appearances, scoring 35 goals and providing 30 assists.
He departed in 2020 for Fiorentina, where he delivered four strong seasons. He totalled 22 goals and 22 assists, and earned a recall to the national team in autumn 2023 at the age of 34.
A prominent Serie A midfielder of the 2010s, Bonaventura closes a senior career spanning Atalanta, Milan, Fiorentina and Al-Shabab.
