Former Kaizer Chiefs defender praises Orlando Pirates' current good work!
In a testament to their growing reputation, Orlando Pirates have earned significant acclaim from an unexpected source—former Kaizer Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe. The ex-defender has pinpointed a fundamental philosophy that he believes distinguishes the Buccaneers within the competitive landscape of the Betway Premiership.
Sweswe’s admiration is directed at the club's prolific youth production line, which has recently introduced a fresh wave of talent to the league. Names like Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Sibusiso Tau, and Simphiwe Selepe are emerging from their system, following in the footsteps of recent successes such as Mohau Nkota and the current Bafana Bafana sensation, Relebohile Mofokeng.
The cornerstone of this success, according to Sweswe, is a behind-the-scenes team that is executing its role with remarkable precision.
“I’ve got to give credit to Orlando Pirates’ scouting and talent identification team. They’re doing a great job in producing young players who are fitting in well in the Betway Premiership,” said Sweswe.
He firmly believes this commitment to internal development is not just a minor strategy, but the core element that will soon propel the team to the highest honor. He elaborated on what makes their approach so unique and effective.
“It sets them apart from most teams in the league and makes them a brilliant team to watch. The way they identify talent and nurture it is impressive, and it’s clear that they’re building for the future.”
Drawing from his own defensive experience, Sweswe also commended the overall environment these youngsters are entering, noting, “As a former defender, I know how important it is to have a solid team structure, and Orlando Pirates seem to have that in place. I watched these young boys against Mamelodi Sundowns, and you can tell that they are gaining confidence each game.”
For Sweswe, the Pirates are not just building a team for the present, but are making a shrewd, long-term investment that others are overlooking.
“They’re definitely a team to watch in the coming seasons. What’s even more impressive is that they’re doing what other teams in South Africa aren’t fully investing in – developing their own talent.
“While others might be tempted to splash the cash on established stars, Orlando Pirates are focusing on growing their own, and it’s a strategy that’s clearly paying off, an investment into the future.”
