Liverpool head into a crucial period of the season with fresh discussion around Arne Slot and what success might mean for his long term future at Anfield. After winning the Premier League in his first campaign in 2024/25, expectations remain high, yet cup football now carries extra significance as supporters and pundits assess the bigger picture.
A favourable FA Cup draw against Wolves has increased optimism around a deep run at Wembley. Liverpool’s recent record against the struggling Premier League side suggests progress to the quarter finals is achievable, adding weight to the idea that silverware could shape how the hierarchy evaluates the season.
The debate is not limited to results alone. Performances, consistency and direction under Arne Slot continue to dominate conversations among Liverpool fans, many of whom remain divided over how the campaign should ultimately be judged.
Former defender Steve Nicol has added fuel to the discussion by suggesting that lifting the FA Cup could make the club’s decision on the manager far simpler. Speaking publicly, Nicol pointed to the competition as a potential turning point if Liverpool fall short of Champions League qualification.
He said on ESPN: “I mean, Liverpool, if Liverpool don’t get in the Champions League, winning the FA Cup could save Arne Slot’s job. That’s that’s how important it is.
I don’t believe that if they don’t get into the Champions League [he gets sacked]. Personally, I would give him the start of the season to go again, but we don’t know what they’re thinking upstairs. So winning the FA Cup would 100% make it make it a lot easier for them to turn around and say, ‘Yeah, on you go next season.’”
Nicol’s view reflects a wider belief that a domestic trophy could reinforce the trust already built after last season’s title success, while also easing pressure from a mixed league campaign.
Among the Liverpool fanbase, opinions remain varied. Some supporters argue that Arne Slot’s league triumph should grant him patience regardless of short term fluctuations. Others believe the team should be further ahead in its development and have questioned certain tactical decisions throughout the season.
Between those viewpoints sits a large section of fans waiting to see how the next few weeks unfold. The FA Cup represents both opportunity and risk, offering a clear moment that could influence perception of progress under Slot.
Steve Nicol’s comments resonate with this middle ground, acknowledging the uncertainty around ownership thinking while highlighting how tangible success often shifts narratives quickly in football.
While the FA Cup could prove decisive, Liverpool’s leadership is likely to assess more than a single trophy. Over the past decade, long term planning and performance trends have guided major decisions, and that approach may continue when evaluating Arne Slot.
Consistency, player development and the team’s trajectory towards competing at the highest level will probably carry as much weight as any Wembley celebration. If Liverpool show clear improvement between now and May, the argument for continuity strengthens. If performances stall, scrutiny will naturally increase.
For now, Liverpool’s season remains alive on multiple fronts, with Arne Slot’s future closely tied to both results and the broader direction of the club. Steve Nicol’s verdict highlights the importance of the FA Cup, yet the final judgement may rest on whether Liverpool look ready to challenge strongly again next season.
