Salford City have completed the signing of former Liverpool and Sunderland forward Fabio Borini (34) on a short-term contract until January, as the striker looks to reignite his career in English football, BBC Sport has reported.
Borini, who last played for Sampdoria in Italy’s Serie B, has spent the past month training with Karl Robinson’s League Two side to maintain his fitness while between clubs. Impressed by his commitment and experience, Salford have now handed the Italian a deal that could inject valuable top-flight pedigree into their struggling squad.
“I came in to train to keep myself fit in this transition between contracts,” Borini told the club’s website. “Salford, the gaffer, and Alex Bruce were kind enough to let me train here. I’ve never played League Two football, so I’m ready to learn from my team-mates while bringing my experience to help the team.”
Borini’s résumé is among the most decorated ever seen at this level. Having begun his Premier League journey with Chelsea in 2009, he later enjoyed spells at Roma, AC Milan, and Swansea, and famously scored in Sunderland’s 2014 League Cup final defeat to Manchester City.
Now, in the twilight of his career, Borini says he is motivated not by prestige but by passion: “I needed real football again, something that warms my heart”
