Gianluigi Donnarumma’s (26) move to Manchester City came as something of a surprise. James Trafford was resigned by the Cityzens earlier in the window, and it was expected that he would be the No.1 for the club this season, especially with Ederson linked with a departure, which did then materialise in the final knockings of the transfer window.
But beyond that, Donnarumma does not coalesce with what you would describe as a Pep Guardiola goalkeeper. The Spaniard likes his goalkeepers to be adept with the ball at their feet, to the extent that they can almost be counted as another outfield player. Ederson, over the years, has been that and has come to define the modern goalkeeper.
Donnarumma contrasts with Ederson. An excellent shotstopper, as he showed during Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League triumph last season, it is his footwork that is seen as his Achilles heel.
However, Joe Hart, who was forced out of Manchester City when Guardiola arrived due to his shortcomings in terms of footwork, has come to the Italian’s defence. “I fell foul of [Guardiola’s] shift,” admitted the former England No.1, speaking on Football Daily.
“I actually think Donnarumma is capable with his feet; he is more than capable. I’ve watched him play under pressure […] why wouldn’t you sign Donnarumma and have him as part of your system as someone who can win you games?” added Hart.
