Charleroi have announced that former Manchester United and Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini will be joining their technical team on a temporary basis. The former Belgian international will be a consultant for a brief period, with the club hoping he will help with the development of their midfield core. From the statement released by the club, it appears Fellaini will be working on the training ground with the team. The move comes just a week after Charleroi saw Rik De Mil leave his role as head coach to take up the vacant position at Gent, who themselves had lost their head coach Ivan Leko to Club Brugge.

Clearly, Fellaini will bring vast experience of playing in the Premier League and at the highest international level to the side. Charleroi have turned things around slightly in the league this season, but with De Mil gone, perhaps they see someone like Fellaini as important to ensure there isn’t a drop off.

The now 38-year-old Fellaini began his career in Belgium with Standard Liege, before joining Everton in 2008. He went on to play 176 games for the Merseyside club, scoring 33 goals. He then followed manager David Moyes to Manchester United, where he was often maligned by the clubs fans but still produced some memorable moments. In 177 games for the Red Devils he scored 22 goals. In 2019 he left England for China and spent many years with Shandong Taishan. Fellaini was a star player in the Chinese top flight, scoring an impressive 52 goals in 141 games.
