Sheffield United have confirmed the signing of versatile midfielder Tahith Chong, who joins on a permanent deal from League One side Luton Town.

The 25-year-old has penned a contract until the summer of 2029, becoming the third acquisition for the Blades this week.

Tahith Chong Speaks As A Blade

Chong arrives at Bramall Lane with plenty of Premier League and Championship experience, and speaking to SUTV, he revealed that the move accelerated in recent days. Chong said: “I am very happy that this was done so quickly and that I’m here now. I’ll be honest, as I’m speaking right now, it has been 48 hours or so, so everything has moved very quickly, and that’s compliments to the club as well to get everything sorted out so quick.

When you think of Sheffield United, you think of a big club and as soon as I heard, I was obviously very interested and very keen to sign. I’ve had two years at Luton, had some ups and downs, but now 100% ready for a fresh start.”

Chong joined Luton in the summer of 2023 after two years at Birmingham City, and he was part of Rob Edwards’ side during their Premier League campaign, where he was a standout player for them, netting four goals from midfield.

Operating more as a left-winger last term, he scored twice and made one assist in 24 starts, and couldn’t stop the Hatters from suffering back-to-back relegations.

What Could Tahith Chong Add to Sheffield United?

Chong’s versatility could perhaps be his most important attribute, offering Ruben Selles options across multiple roles. He can play as a central midfielder in a trio with license to break forward, a winger on either flank who can stretch the pitch, or even an attacking midfielder providing pace and power to time runs beyond the striker and get in behind defences.

At 6ft1, Chong adds a physical presence as well as pace. During his standout Premier League campaign for Luton, he showed great ability to progress the ball via carrying the ball. This could fit in nicely with United’s other technical players like Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’Hare, who work well when they have more athletic dribblers like Chong to open up lanes for them, as seen during their time at Coventry City.

To add, his pressing style and his recovery runs are also well-suited to the intensity that Selles demands from his players.

While the former Manchester United man doesn’t excite much on paper (due to his low goal contribution numbers), he is a smart pick-up for the Blades due to his potential effectiveness as well as versatility in Selles’ system.
