Medhi Benatia has revealed Marseille tried to sign Lucas Da Cunha in January but failed to do a deal.

"We followed him for one-and-a-half years. We tried to sign him from Como, but he was too expensive," he told Canal Plus.

Da Cunha was an outcast at OGC Nice and spent a loan spell at Clermont Foot before moving to Serie B with Como. Under Cesc Fabregas he earned promotion and captained the club to UEFA Champions League qualification.

His rise has been noticed, and he played a prominent role in his first France camp after impressing new France manager Zinédine Zidane.

Instead, OM signed Quinten Timber. He excelled across six months at the Vélodrome, then left amid financial issues to join Crystal Palace in a €20m summer move.

Benatia left OM last summer.
