The versatile player however, has ended that speculation by signing for French top flight side Toulouse, who are managed by former Motherwell manager and one time Celtic managerial target Jens Berthel Askou.

The French side were clearly delighted in snapping up the Canadian international as they beamed on social media: “Highly sought after this summer, particularly in Belgium, Spain, Scotland and England, Niko Sigur has chosen Toulouse to continue his career at the highest level.”

Many Celtic supporters were keen to see the versatile Sigur, an international teammate of Alistair Johnston, join the club particular as he can fill in right back in the wake of his fellow countryman’s latest spell on the treatment table.

Reports in Croatia claimed just last week that Celtic had won the race for the much sought after players signature, but now it’s being questioned if that interest was ever as strong as suggested, as it’s thought that Celtic weren’t activity pursuing the player as was widely believed.

Sigur himself spoke of his delight at ending speculation over his future by pledging the next few years of his career to the French side.

He said: “I’m very happy to sign for Toulouse, and I’m already looking forward to meeting the fans. I’m a versatile player; I like to attack and defend and bring all my energy to the team!”

As much as Sigur would have been an exciting signing, Celtic have been busy bulking up their midfield options by signing Oliver Sorensen, with a deal for Dutch youth international Joel van den Berg also close to completion.
