After one season in the Eredivisie with Heracles Almelo, Jetro Willems has opted for a new adventure in abroad. The former PSV, Newcastle United and Eintracht Frankfurt defender has joined Spanish second tier side CD Castellón on a contract reported to be a one-year deal.

Willems, 30, has spent the last few weeks training with Castellón, who achieved promotion from the third tier last season. Former PEC Zwolle boss Dick Schreuder currently manages Castellón, and the Dutchman made the decision to recruit Jetro Willems.

At Heracles, Willems featured 20 times in the Eredivisie last season. He’s previously played 144 times for PSV Eindhoven, 46 times for Eintracht Frankfurt and 19 times for Newcastle United. Willems is the second Dutch newcomer at Castellón this summer, after they signed former Utrecht and Fortuna Sittard forward Mats Seuntjens. Two big moves from the Spanish side, who are back in the second tier for the first time since the 2020/21 campaign.
