Heracles Almelo are set to sign Jetro Willems this summer on a free transfer, according to Voetbal International. The former Newcastle United and Eintracht Frankfurt defender spent last season at FC Groningen, who suffered their first relegation from the Eredivisie in 23 years. Willems will join Heracles who were crowned champions of the Eerste Divisie last season. This means the 29-year-old will still be playing in the Dutch top flight next season.
FC Groningen were keen on keeping Willems at the club, but the 22-time Netherlands international decided not to extend his contract. His move to Heracles is not yet complete, but it’s expected to be finalised very soon.
Jetro Willems kicked off his professional career at Sparta Rotterdam, before moving to PSV in 2011. He featured 192 times across all competitions for PSV, where he won two Eredivisie titles, one KNVB Cup and three Dutch Super Cups. He featured 65 times for Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and 19 times in the Premier League for Newcastle. Now, he looks set for a new adventure in his career with Heracles Almelo.
