Just weeks after stepping down as president of OGC Nice, Jean-Pierre Rivère has made a foray into the world of politics, allying himself with the far-right candidate for the Nice mayorship, Éric Ciotti, the president of the UDR.

Rivère was present alongside Ciotti on Monday at a press conference, during which it was announced that, in case of a Ciotti victory over the incumbent Christian Estrosi in five months’ time in the municipal elections, Rivère would become his assistant.

After stepping back from his role as president of Le Gym in August, Rivère said that he wished to explore projects outside of football, but insisted that he did not see himself stepping into politics, as he now has. Despite appearing alongside Ciotti and assuming a role in his team in the event of victory, the former OGCN president insisted that he was still “apolitical”.

Rivère’s support is a big boost for Ciotti and the UDR, who will now hope to see an increase in support from Les Aiglons’ fanbase, still attached to their former president, and especially from their many thousands of ultras in the Populaire Sud.
