Former Orlando Pirates player tips Mosimane to lead Zimbabwe!
With the recent dismissal of Michael Nees, a new chapter awaits Zimbabwean football, sparking immediate debate over the future leadership of The Warriors. In the wake of this decision, former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Alois Bunjira has stepped forward to champion a prominent figure as the ideal foreign candidate for the role: the seasoned and highly-decorated Pitso Mosimane.
The Zimbabwe Football Association [ZIFA] brought Nees' tenure to an abrupt end following a run of poor results. His time at the helm, which began in July 2024, culminated in a disappointing record of just two victories from sixteen matches, alongside seven draws and seven defeats. This was deemed insufficient, despite the fact that he had successfully guided the team to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
While Kaitano Tembo, a former assistant coach, is currently positioned to lead the squad into the tournament, Bunjira is looking beyond the immediate future. He makes a compelling case for Mosimane, emphasizing his unparalleled credentials. “If we decide to go for a foreign coach, I would choose Pitso Mosimane. He has a proven track record of success and is highly qualified. He knows many of our players, and for me, Pitso is the best,” Bunjira stated, highlighting the coach's familiarity with the player pool.
Acknowledging the potential for a local appointment, Bunjira also put forward the name of former Chippa United coach Norman Mapeza. However, he conceded that Mapeza's past challenges in managing foreign-based players could be a hurdle. Bunjira envisioned a potent solution, suggesting that Mapeza could form a formidable coaching partnership if assisted by Kaitano Tembo. He reflected on Mapeza's missed potential, adding, “If Norman Mapeza hadn’t had issues with the foreign boys, he could have carried on as national team coach. He could have achieved wonders with this crop of players.”
