Former Portugal national team head coach Fernando Santos has reportedly rejected an offer to take over the hotseat at Al Ahly.

The Red Devils have been without a coach since relieving Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro of his duties just three months into the job.

During his tenure, the former Orlando Pirates boss oversaw seven matches in the dugout, winning one, drawing four and losing the other two games.

Furthermore, Riveiro left Ahly in a dismal 12th place on the log standings with five points from the first four league outings.

The Egyptian giants earmarked a host of coaches for the vacant post, including Jose Gomes, Paulo Bento and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Miguel Cardoso.

However, sources have indicated that Bento and Cardoso are not high on the list, while Gomes is said to be keen to continue his project with Al Fateh in the Saudi Pro League.

Now, whispers echoing from Portugal suggest that Santos, who guided Portugal to the 2016 Euro triumph, has turned down Ahly in favor of an offer from Panathinaikos of Greece.

Meanwhile, Rui Vitoria is also in contention for the gargantuan job in Cairo as he is currently unattached to any club.
