Al-Gharafa SC confirmed the signing of former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico (31) on a free transfer after he left the French capital at the end of his contract in July.

In May 2023, Rico was involved in a near-fatal accident when he was on a pilgrimage in Spain. The goalkeeper was trampled by a horse suffering serious injuries to his head and neck. He was placed in an induced coma for 19 days and received intensive care for over a month.

Rico was adamant once he was released from hospital in August 2023 that he would make a return to football. In April of this year, he was given the greenlight by doctors to return to the field. However, he would not make another appearance for PSG. And his contract was allowed to expire.

Sergio Rico set to finally return to the field after lengthy absence

The goalkeeper will instead look to Qatar to finally return to the field having not played since a loan spell at RCD Mallorca in May 2022.
