Although it was a courageous move last summer, former Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty played a key role in Hull City’s return to the second tier of English football. The 24-year-old prodigy signed a three-year contract upon failing to grab a regular status at his boyhood club and has now earned a key role under Grant McCann en route to conquering the League One crown at the KCOM Stadium.

The Scotsman revealed how Steven Gerrard suggested to the youngster to accept the challenge and be a part of McCann’s ambitious project in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Docherty said to PA News Agency in a recent interview.

Having progressed through the youth ranks of Hamilton Academical, the midfielder joined the Bears in January 2018 following a couple of impressive years in the Premiership. But his minutes were limited under Gerrard despite making his presence known out on loan with Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian. A well-equipped midfield left him with only a sporadic status and a decision was made from the player’s camp to ply his trade elsewhere.

His exquisite run of form helped the gaffer avoid a late downfall similar to the previous term and secure an instant return to the Championship, repaying the trust of the owners in keeping hold of him despite a dreadful demotion.

The Light Blues, however, are blessed to have an array of options with Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield all capable of slotting in the centre of the pitch. Nnamdi Ofoborh has agreed on pre-contract terms in winter to complete a Bosman switch in the upcoming window and  Gerrard, therefore, must prioritize other areas if he successfully retains the services of his current options. Also, Champions League football is back at Ibrox after years of despair and the decision of letting Docherty go makes sense as he would have struggled to find a place like Ross McCrorie or Jamie Barjonas.
