Fabio Capello believes Inter Milan remain favourites to lift the Scudetto, but he has warned that AC Milan are ready to take advantage of any slip-ups.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Real Madrid and England head coach analysed the title race and the psychological dynamics shaping the season.

Capello first addressed Massimiliano Allegri’s cautious public stance. “It’s normal that Max plays hide-and-seek,” he said.

“He’s too experienced not to know the risks of saying the word ‘Scudetto’ in public. When you fly very high, if you stop and fall, it hurts even more. So he stays low, talks about tables and does the calculations.”

Despite that caution, Capello made it clear that Milan remain firmly in the title conversation.

Allegri’s side extended their unbeaten run in Serie A to 20 matches with victory over Lecce, and Capello praised the coach’s work on the group.

“It’s a great result, born from the psychological work the coach has done with the squad,” he explained.

“Milan now have spirit. That’s why they manage to recover even games where they don’t play well or go behind. I think Max has worked a lot on this aspect, and the single defeat against Cremonese in 21 matches proves it.”

Looking ahead to the calendar, Capello highlighted a potential advantage for Milan. Roma and Bologna will face the Rossoneri after European commitments, while Inter, Napoli and Juventus remain involved in continental competition.

“Being able to focus on the league is an advantage for Allegri, without doubt,” Capello said.

However, the former coach still sees Inter in control of their destiny. “Inter will have to slow down against a few smaller teams, otherwise a comeback becomes difficult,” he warned.

The message is clear. Inter hold the edge, but Capello believes the margin for error remains slim. Any stumble could reopen the race and hand Milan a genuine chance to turn the season on its head.
