According to Daily Echo, former Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo, 40, is reportedly in intensive care after emergency surgery for a serious lung problem.

He was admitted to a public hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Thursday evening with a pleural effusion. The condition is a build-up of fluid between the lungs and chest wall and can indicate a potentially fatal infection.

He had reportedly felt unwell for several days before his sister found him at home and sought medical help. He underwent surgery then was transferred to intensive care, where his condition was given a reserved prognosis.

The procedure is reported to have involved the removal of lung tissue, though the hospital has not confirmed the operation details. An update on Saturday said his family reported a favourable development after the operation, though he remains in hospital.

Osvaldo spent the 2013/14 season at Saints after joining from Roma for a then club-record fee. He scored three Premier League goals, including a solo effort against Manchester City.

His Saints career was cut short after a training-ground incident with team-mate Jose Fonte in January 2014, and he returned to Italy with Juventus. He later had loans with Inter Milan and Boca Juniors before leaving for Porto in 2015.

The former Italy international scored four goals for his country, stepped away from professional football after a spell with Boca Juniors in 2016, and made a brief comeback with Banfield in 2020.
