James Maddison may opt to remain at Tottenham Hotspur even if they suffer the unthinkable fate of Premier League relegation this summer, according to former Spurs scout Mick Brown. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown argued that the 29-year-old England international’s immediate priorities are entirely about getting fit again rather than chasing a transfer, regardless of which division Tottenham occupy next season.
Brown specifically named Aston Villa among the clubs likely to circle the midfielder, but his reading of the situation suggests any deal realistically falls into January territory at the earliest. Maddison has missed the entire 2025-26 campaign after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, crucially, the same knee he previously injured during Tottenham’s pre-season fixture against Newcastle United in South Korea last August.
He will not return before the season closes in May. Brown told Football Insider that Villa and other interested parties may need to wait until the midseason window before Maddison genuinely looks for his options, and only then if he can sustain a convincing spell of form through pre-season.
The broader situation makes this even more telling: Tottenham sit just one point above the relegation zone with nine games remaining, having not won a domestic match in 2026, cycling through multiple managers and presently sitting with Igor Tudor in the dugout.
“Maddison is going to be an interesting one. If the reports on his recovery are positive and he returns for Tottenham in pre-season, there could be an opportunity to bring him in on a bargain deal.
“If Tottenham are relegated, they’re going to struggle to keep hold of players, and they’ll have to sell, so the opportunity will be there for clubs like Villa. From Maddison’s point of view, though, I think there’s a strong possibility he could stay at Spurs.
“The major factor for him is getting back fit and playing, and I would think he needs a good pre-season to get back playing first and foremost. If he can do that and get back to form early in the season with Tottenham, whichever league they might be in, then it might be something he looks at in January. The big thing for him, though, is returning to playing regularly, and that might mean turning down interest from elsewhere and staying at Spurs,” said Brown.

Bluntly, no, and the case against is stronger than the romance of the headline suggests. Emery has deliberately shaped his squad around players who carry the ball with intensity and intelligence, placing high value on dribblers and carriers in midfield and forward areas, with the likes of Morgan Rogers, Amadou Onana, and Youri Tielemans excelling in this department. Maddison’s creative profile does complement that framework on paper.
His late runs from deep, incisive distribution, and consistent set-piece threat address gaps Villa periodically expose in tight games, and in full health, he represents one of the more complete attacking midfielders in English football. Those are genuine strengths. However, a second ACL rupture to the same knee raises genuine doubts about his long-term explosiveness and durability, and Emery does not build squads around players working their way back from serious injuries; he signs ready-made contributors.
Beyond the injury concern, Villa face a complicated summer with potential exits from Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Emiliano Martinez, which directs their transfer priorities far more urgently to defensive reinforcement and proven attacking quality. Lucas Bergvall, younger, fitter, and already attracting Villa’s reported attention alongside Chelsea, fits Emery’s system more completely and carries none of the post-ACL uncertainty. Realistically, Maddison stays at Spurs through pre-season, works his way back into contention, and the conversation about a Villa move only resurfaces in January 2027 if everything aligns perfectly, which, given how much has to go right, may never actually happen.
