Robbie Keane says being linked with the Tottenham job is a nice indicator of the job he is doing at Ferencváros – but insists he is only focused on his current club.
Keane has been linked with several managerial jobs following his impressive start at Ferencváros and is among the early favourites to become the next manager of his former club Spurs, should they decide to part ways with Thomas Frank.
“I think it’s impossible to not be aware of anything these days, to be honest, especially when you have two kids who are Tottenham fans,” Keane said in response to the reports.
“Thomas Frank is a very, very good manager. He has just started there.
“A lot of stuff gets written, even when I was a player about going somewhere, going to different places. It goes over my head. I’m concentrating on what I’m doing.
“I think it’s nice that your name is there. Who puts it there? I have no clue. I think it shows you that I’m doing okay.
“To be even put there, again, I don’t even know, is it just the bookmakers? I have no clue how it works. I’m obviously aware of it, but I’m happy here.”
Asked if he still has an affinity for Spurs, Keane continued: “I mean, you can’t be at a club for that long if it doesn’t. That’s natural.
“It’s a fantastic club, unbelievable training ground and stadium. It’s amazing, of course, as we all know. And really good players, good squad of players. Yes, we’ve got a lot of injuries, but it’s certainly a place that I always look out for.
“As I said, my two boys are Tottenham fans. They’re always watching, and of course, like me, I watch every game anyway, regardless of Tottenham or anyone. It’s a wonderful football club, and I’m sure there’s no doubt that they’ll be back to where they belong.”
Keane’s current side have won four and drawn three heading into the final Europa League league stage game against Nottingham Forest, making them one of only three teams across both the Champions League and Europa League still unbeaten, alongside Arsenal and Viktoria Plzen.
The Hungarian side can secure a top-eight finish with a result against Forest on Thursday evening, which would earn direct qualification to the round of 16.
“What we’ve done so far is incredible,” the former Spurs forward said.
“If you look at all the teams we’ve played, in terms of the budget that we have, I think we’re the third-lowest in the Europa League.
“The teams that we have played against, I’m not talking about small teams, I’m talking about massive teams. Fenerbahce, Rangers, they’re big clubs. Now it’s Forest, so the games get tougher and tougher.
“I’m not naive either, to think the team can come here and win the game. Of course, I always have belief, but they’re way more superior than we are.
“We know we’re up against it, but I can’t come here with any fear. It’s not me. I just can’t.
“I told the players the same thing. Don’t come here with any fear. Go take risks sometimes. Will it be tough at times? Yes, of course it will, but go and enjoy yourself. Express yourself and try to keep this run unbeaten. We know it will be difficult but we’ve done seven so far.”
