Former Sunderland academy striker Jake Waters is on trial with National League North newcomers Hebburn Town, but the club cannot wait long for a decision on his future.
According to Sunderland Echo, manager Daniel Moore is helping Waters as he aims to remain in full-time football, and has urged clarity on the player’s plans.
Waters joined the Hornets on loan midway through last season as they chased the Northern Premier League Premier Division title, after two ACL lay-offs. He struck twice off the bench on debut in a 3-0 home win against Stocksbridge Park Steels, and was part of the side that went up after seeing off FC United of Manchester and Hednesford Town in a three-way title fight.
He returned to Sunderland at the end of the campaign and was released last month alongside several other academy products. The 20-year-old is still searching for a club and featured in Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly against Lee Cattermole’s Gateshead.
The club can provide a platform for young players, but numbers must fit the budget and any move would be down to Waters, who the manager thinks wants to remain full-time.
Waters could get another run-out when Hebburn visit Morpeth Town on Saturday, with kick-off at two pm.
