Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital with a wrist injury after an awkward post-match fall as England celebrated their World Cup last-16 win over co-hosts Mexico. According to Sunderland Echo, England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the former Sunderland midfielder was hurt in the incident.

Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty sent the Three Lions through from an Azteca Stadium five-goal thriller. A crowd of 100,000 watched England secure a quarter-final place.

Tuchel’s side played for over 40 minutes with 10 men after Jarell Quansah received a straight red card following a VAR review of a strong challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Henderson, an unused substitute, fell over an advertising board while celebrating with travelling England supporters. Reports suggest he will not travel back to England’s Kansas City base and will receive treatment in a Mexico City hospital.

Tuchel said he had mixed emotions, praising his players’ mentality and calling it a very special night. He added Henderson’s wrist injury was quite serious and that he did not yet know the next steps.
