BVB coach Markus Högner made eight changes to the starting eleven that had played in the most recent league game. Only captain Paula Reimann, Ann-Sophie Vogel and Rita Schumacher remained in the starting eleven.
In the first half, SV Thülen sat deep in their own half with six at the back. Despite having a lot of possession, the BVB women struggled to find the gaps in this highly defensive formation. When Marah Tayeh got through to the opponents’ goal for Borussia in the 30th minute, the SV Thülen goalkeeper was able to deal with the situation. The Borussians did not have a serious opportunity to score in the first 45 minutes against the Westfalenliga team. This was also Högner’s assessment: “In the first half it was a typical Pokal game where the opposition defends very well at the beginning.”
After half time, the BVB coach responded with a slightly adapted system of play and the substitution of striker Dana Marquardt. These changes soon had the desired effect. In the 60th minute, Celina Baum chipped the ball to the far post and Marquardt put it in the net, taking the Borussians a goal up. “You could feel that that took the pressure off for a lot of the players,” Högner observed.
It was only a few minutes until Marquardt scored again. In the 65th minute, after a nice through ball by Rita Schumacher, the striker slotted the ball past the SV Thülen goalkeeper and into the far corner. But that still wasn’t enough: Just three minutes later, Vogel put the ball in the corner of the opponents’ goal from 30 metres away to make it 3-0 (68). A minute later, Hedda Wahle extended BVB’s lead to 4-0 within 09 minutes with a beautiful goal from a free kick.
“We were patient and played better in the second half. After losing on Sunday, this win is especially important. We wanted to get through to the next round - we’ve managed to do that, and that’s the most important thing,” Högner summarised. BVB’s opponents in the second round of the Westfalenpokal have already been confirmed: FC Schalke 04. This means that the derby that took place in the final of the previous Pokal season will now be repeated in the second round.
First, however, the BVB women will be playing in the Regionalliga on Sunday (07.09). The Black&Yellows look forward to plenty of support in the Stadion Rote Erde in their game against Borussia Mönchengladbach II. Tickets for the game are available in the online ticket shop. Those unable to attend can watch the game exclusively and for free on Pluto TV.
