Gary Rowett’s short-term spell at Leicester City has reshaped selection, creating winners and losers under a deal to season’s end at King Power Stadium.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, if his contract is not extended he is halfway through his stint. He has seven points from seven and may need more in the next seven to keep the club in the Championship.
Victor Kristiansen began Rowett’s first game, then was injured at Stoke, so Luke Thomas came in and has played every minute since. With fewer errors and tighter defending, he looks more assured.
Oliver Skipp has started every match, his energy shielding the defence, and he was star man in win at Bristol City. Although Rowett favours less possession, Harry Winks remains central, with ball retention seen as crucial.
Caleb Okoli kept his spot when Jamaal Lascelles came in at Watford, with Ben Nelson making way. Aside from a mistake at Boro, Okoli has marshalled the box well.
Jordan Ayew has featured regularly but without much impact in the role used, and supporter frustration has intensified.
Joe Aribo has not started under Rowett and has only 12 minutes across the past five games. Bade Aluko impressed in King’s final match, had 18 straight Championship squads, but has been omitted for the last three, with youngsters Louis Page and, to a degree, Jeremy Monga also overlooked for experience.
Jannik Vestergaard’s hernia surgery was ill-timed. With Lascelles alongside Okoli, the manager may persist, which could restrict Vestergaard and his Denmark World Cup bid.
