It has now been five years since Julian Nagelsmann joined FC Bayern. Yet the effects of that multi-million deal are still being felt today. Ahead of the upcoming friendly against RB Leipzig, an unusual agreement from that coaching transfer is now coming into play—and it guarantees the Saxons millions in revenue.

On Saturday, FC Bayern will host RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena as part of the Telekom Cup. For both teams, the match is one of the final tough tests before the start of the competitive season.

However, this is by no means an ordinary preseason game. As reported by BILD, the match was agreed upon years ago as part of Julian Nagelsmann’s move to Munich.

Nagelsmann had left Leipzig in the summer of 2021 to succeed Hansi Flick at the German record champions. At the time, Bayern had already paid a hefty transfer fee for the coach. In addition, a so-called “compensation match” was apparently agreed upon as further compensation.

It is precisely this match that is now being played.

Leipzig is set to receive a guaranteed three million euros.

According to information from BILD, RB Leipzig will receive a guaranteed three million euros from the match. For Bayern, however, this does not necessarily mean that this sum must be financed entirely from their own coffers.

Since the match is taking place at the Allianz Arena, the proceeds from the game go to the host. Through ticket sales and other revenue generated by the match, the Munich club can thus cover a significant portion of the agreed-upon payment itself.

The fact that the match is being played roughly five years after Nagelsmann’s departure nevertheless makes the story extraordinary. After all, the 39-year-old has long since ceased to be the coach of FC Bayern. His tenure in Munich ended back in March 2023.

From a sporting perspective, the agreement reached at that time no longer holds any significance for Nagelsmann. Financially, however, his move continues to have an impact to this day.

The Telekom Cup is played like a regular soccer match, consisting of two 45-minute halves. If the score is tied after regulation time, the game goes directly to a penalty shootout without extra time. The winner is then presented with the trophy.

Eberl’s move also continues to have consequences

For Bayern, the Nagelsmann agreement is apparently not even the last outstanding transfer deal with RB Leipzig.

Such clauses are quite common for the Saxon club. According to BILD, a similar match was also agreed upon when Max Eberl moved to Munich.

Eberl joined FC Bayern in early 2024, taking on the role of sporting director. Prior to that, he had served as sporting director at RB Leipzig. According to the report, a friendly match between the two clubs is still pending for his transfer as well.

For now, however, the Nagelsmann agreement is being fulfilled. Years after the coach left both Leipzig and FC Bayern, his move at the time is once again bringing RB guaranteed revenue of three million euros.

For Munich, the match is also valuable from a sporting perspective. A week before their first competitive match, the clash with a Bundesliga rival offers a true test of their mettle. And thanks to the revenue generated at the well-attended Allianz Arena, the unusual multi-million euro bill from the Nagelsmann deal should at least partially pay for itself.
