Fowler: St Polten win a test of character

Mary Fowler believes our comeback win over St Polten in the UEFA Women’s Champions League once again proved City’s ability to grind out results.

The Australian headed home the winner with ten minutes to play in Vienna, helping the Blues maintain our 100% start in Group D.

City had taken an early lead through a stunning Alanna Kennedy strike but needed an Aoba Fujino strike – her first for the Club – and Fowler’s late intervention to get over the line having trailed 2-1 just before the hour mark.

For Fowler, the manner of the victory showed that there’s a grit in Taylor’s team to match the obvious quality.

“I think it says a lot about the team. It's good to win in many different ways,” she explained.

"Sometimes you can have the lead and then be drawing, and it can be easy to drop your head and feel like the other team have the momentum.

"But we've shown in the last couple of games we can be in control of that and change that. It's been really good to get a win like that with the girls."

Fowler started at centre forward against St Polten before moving out wide when Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw was introduced at half-time.

The starting front three of the Australian, Fujino and Chloe Kelly all had a hand in at least one of City’s goals on the night, with substitute Lauren Hemp also grabbing an assist.

And Fowler believes our attackers are playing with a real freedom at the moment, each bringing a unique quality to the team.

She added: "It's really good. We have really creative players up front so it's nice to link up and have fun.

"We play our best football when we're enjoying it. I've enjoyed it tonight and I hope the other girls did."
