The FPF has finalised its verdict on remarks made by José Mourinho and Rui Costa after Braga v Benfica. According to Glorioso 1904, the Disciplinary Council has closed the cases and will not impose any punishment.
The proceedings were opened after the pair criticised referee João Gonçalves following their most recent Liga Portugal Betclic meeting in 2025, which ended in a contentious draw.
Mourinho’s case centred on ironic comments in which he suggested Benfica had won, citing a disallowed goal that was valid, which would have made it 3-2.
Rui Costa adopted a more forthright stance, targeting VAR Tiago Martins. He contrasted a non-existent foul given in that game with a Taça de Portugal incident in which Matheus Reis’s stamp on Andrea Belotti was ignored.
That match was the first of two meetings where officiating came under fire. Days later, Benfica faced Braga again and exited the Taça da Liga, with João Pinheiro’s semi-final display deemed very unsatisfactory after several errors.
