Florian Wirtz is a player who was heavily selected as part of FPL managers’ teams. The German currently has over 30% ownership.
It is fair to say that the British record signing didn’t perform as expected, dropping a blank, and only rewarding those who had faith with a measly two points.
You may be sitting there looking at Wirtz and thinking the 8.5 million price tag in FPL would be better suited elsewhere, but should you be reactionary, or should you hold out faith in the Liverpool midfielder?
Every manager is going to have different thoughts, but we believe there is one correct move.
Florian Wirtz is a definite keep in your FPL teams ahead of GW2. While the two points were certainly not an ideal outcome, the German still looked lively throughout the match.
He made some nice touches, linked play well on occasions, and his quality was evident. However, the physicality of the league did seem to take its toll on him, and it would have come as a shock.
It was clear that Wirtz was unprepared for just how physical Premier League football is, and it resulted in him losing possession on a number of occasions.
On the opposite side, Hugo Ekitike looked like he was born for the league. The Frenchman was physically dominant and imposing and took his goal well.
When Wirtz finally comes to grips with the Premier League, that will be a major benefit for those FPL managers who selected him in their midfield.
Despite the varied performance, Wirtz’s xG+A was still quite good in comparison to the other midfielders around his price point.
Out of Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Bruno Fernandes and Florian Wirtz, only Fernandes had more xG+A, according to FOTMOB.
Wirtz ended the match with three chances created, racking up 0.42 xG+A. Compared to the list above, he also had the second most touches in the box with five, with only Palmer’s seven beating him.
Additionally, the attacking midfielder is taking corners on both sides of the pitch, and with the aerial presence the Reds have in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Hugo Ekitike, you can expect them to be a real threat from set pieces.
Florian Wirtz was getting into great positions, and Liverpool are dominant going forward. With some more time to get to grips with English football, there is no doubt the German has potential for incredible FPL hauls.
For now, keep the German, but also watch him over the next couple of weeks; if the goal involvements don’t arrive anytime soon, then it will be time to sell up.
