Didier Deschamps signs off on his record-breaking reign at the FIFA World Cup this summer, his final tournament after 14 years in charge of France.

The 57-year-old has guided France to back-to-back finals and now hunts a fitting farewell. His 26-man squad blends Ballon d’Or talent with the last survivors of 2018. Kylian Mbappé captains the side at his third finals, despite recent struggles with a thigh injury. The Real Madrid forward has 56 goals for France, second only to Olivier Giroud’s 57.

Ousmane Dembélé partners him in attack, fresh from back-to-back Champions League triumphs with Paris Saint-Germain. The 29-year-old scored 35 goals as PSG lifted the European Cup for the first time in 2024-25. He became only the second French player this century to claim the Ballon d’Or that October. Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola then helped PSG retain the trophy against Arsenal in Budapest last week.

Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise completes a fearsome attacking quartet. Manchester City playmaker Rayan Cherki and Arsenal defender William Saliba feature among seven Premier League-based selections. Full-back Lucas Hernandez and midfielder N’Golo Kanté join Mbappé and Dembélé as the only survivors from the 2018 winning group.

Deschamps has made some bold calls ahead of his last hurrah. Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga misses out after an injury-disrupted season, with Tottenham’s Randal Kolo Muani also overlooked. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was omitted too, with uncapped Lens stopper Robin Risser earning a maiden call-up alongside Brice Samba behind Mike Maignan.

Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké, ruled out by a season-ending Achilles injury in April, is a notable but expected absentee. Group I pits France against Senegal, Iraq and Norway. The opener with Sadio Mané’s Senegal in New Jersey on 16 June carries genuine weight. Norway and Erling Haaland await on the final matchday in Foxborough.
