Ousmane Dembélé (28) won the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career on Monday night. The Paris Saint-Germain forward beat Lamine Yamal (18) to the prestigious individual accolade. France Football’s Editor-in-Chief, Vincent Garcia, has now told L’Équipe that the Frenchman won it “quite comfortably”.

Going into Monday night’s ceremony in Paris, the winner remained undisclosed, unlike in many recent editions, when the winner has been leaked ahead of time. However, Dembélé was the strong favourite to win the award. Not only did he shine individually last season, netting 35 goals, but it was also a strong season on a collective level as PSG won the Champions League for the first time in their history. Les Parisiens also won Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Trophée des Champions, and the UEFA Super Cup.

Garcia, who could not disclose the voting, gave an indication as to how close it was between Dembélé and Yamal in this year’s voting. “There wasn’t really a contest. Ousmane won it quite comfortably,” he revealed, before stating that voting on all continents were heavily in favour of the Frenchman winning the award. The exact votes will be revealed in France Football on Saturday.
